The surgery for the poor is a center where you can send patients to other medical facilities that are not ready for them, for example due to the absence of documents, insufficient personal hygiene or problems with health insurance.
“This is the second general practitioner’s office run by the Salvation Army. The first one was opened at the beginning of 2018 in Ostrava, and based on three years of experience, we have clear evidence that it is worthwhile to have a surgery at least in large centers, ”says Jan František Krupa, National Salvation Army Social Services Director.
The Prague ambulance will function as an official medical facility with a contract with health insurance companies. The local medical staff will also offer care to uninsured people. Due to this, according to Krupa, additional financial resources are necessary.

The operation of the surgery is now paid for, among other things, from donations from Salvation Army supporters and from a project of the Ministry of Health, which is funded by European funds. According to Krupa, this project should end this year, so the operators are working with the ministry to further support the operation of surgeries.
Homeless people usually do not seek medical help for a variety of reasons, although their health is often much worse than their majority of people due to their way of life. “She suffers from skin diseases, upper road diseases and various communicable diseases. The occurrence of psychiatric diseases, which are well above the national average in this group of people, is also frequent. Homeless people are also increasingly victims of psychological and physical violence and sexual assault, and premature deaths are more common than the general population, ”explains the Salvation Army doctor.
A similar outpatient clinic is run by another organization that helps homeless people in Prague, Naděje. Her surgery for the homeless is located in U Bulhara near the Central Station.
