Parking meters: soon on-board cameras in Toulouse
The cameras to equip four vehicles were ordered by the Toulouse town hall. The automatic parking payment control system is to be implemented in the first half of the year.
In addition to pedestrianization, which is progressing slowly, the pressure on the car in the center of Toulouse will increase through another means, that of paid parking and its control. So far, the 33 public highway surveillance officers cannot control the 16,300 paid places in the streets in one day, due to lack of sufficient numbers. A number of paid places which increases regularly with the increase of resident parking areas. During the city council of October 22, Toulouse’s elected officials decided to adopt, as have other large cities, an automated license plate reading system via on-board cameras on cars. The objective is an implementation “in the first half of 2022”, recalled this Wednesday Emilion Esnault, deputy mayor in charge of security.
Of the four ramps (which will be attached to as many vehicles) ordered, two must be received in the coming days, indicate the deputy mayor. A period of tests will then begin, both to test the technique but also the treatment of a series of provisions, such as free access for people with disabilities.
Emilion Esnault ensures that the treatment will be “semi-automatic”, that is to say that there will always be a validation phase by a municipal agent. If the chosen one does not set a PV quota, this technique will activate the car control speed. It will become difficult to escape payment from the parking meter. Today, the town hall estimates at 70% the number of motorists who continue not to pay for their parking.
