Many times | Sweden: The sludge oil collection vessel “Norra Skagerrak” will undergo hybrid conversion
The sludge oil collection tank Norra Skagerrak will be converted to hybrid operation during the second quarter of 2022, states the Port of Gothenburg.
The vessel will for the most part run on electric power and be equipped with an auxiliary engine that runs on the renewable hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).
All ports in Sweden are obliged to receive sludge from ships arriving at the port. Northern Skagerrak will collect oily engine room waste, so-called sludge, from ships arriving at the Port of Gothenburg.
The Port of Gothenburg’s procured the service from Northern Energy & Supply and the service vessel will start operating during the second quarter of 2022.
The conversion will save 680 tons of carbon dioxide.
“We are a company that is at the forefront when it comes to developing innovative solutions,” says David Kristensson, CEO of Northern Energy & Supply.
“We are once again grateful to have the confidence to work together with the Port of Gothenburg in a project that will result in an improved environment in the Gothenburg area.”
When the call for tenders for sludge collection expired, the Port of Gothenburg’s climate target was used as a starting point in the evaluation model.
Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions was one of the quality criteria applied when assessing potential service providers.
After compilation and evaluation, the Northern Energy & Supply fossil-free solution proved to be the best alternative.
“Our goal at the Port of Gothenburg is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the port by 70 percent by 2030,” states Erik Waller, Deputy Harbor Master at the Port of Gothenburg.
“Northern Skagerrak will serve approximately 6,000 incoming vessels each year and the transition to hybrid operations will be an important step in the right direction. “
