Françoise Ampoulange: “The presence of wild boar in the center of Toulouse is rare”
Last Monday, a wild boar was shot in a Toulouse park. Françoise Ampoulange, elected from Toulouse in charge of the animal service in town, explains that the presence of this animal in the center of Toulouse is very “rare”.
Is there an increase in the number of wild boars in town?
For the year 2021, we have not received a large number of calls reporting wild boars. Monday’s case remains exceptional and very rare. The calls we receive mainly concern wild boars in the Pouvourville area. This is due to the topography of the land. I think the boar slaughtered in Toulouse went up the Garonne. On the side of towns like Portet or Cugnaux, there is the Garonne Ariège reserve, agricultural land, and a number of cards, which attract wild boars, but it is very rare that they come to town. In 2021, we were informed of a case on the side of Saint-Martin-du-Touch, another on the side of Saint-Orens.
What is the protocol in the event of the presence of a wild boar on the public highway?
The municipal and national police secure the area, while our animal service in town calls on the louveterie lieutenant seconded by the Haute-Garonne prefecture. It is she who manages the wild animals in the metropolis.
Are wild boars heavily killed?
Not at all. We seek above all to capture them and release them in the find. I insist on this point. These are regulated species and beatings which are only authorized by the prefect in agreement with the hunting federations. In the case of the Monday boar, I think that given the location, the urgency of the situation, and the weight of the animal, it was decided to slaughter it.
What will become of this boar?
It will probably be handed over to the Hunting Federations. We are there in support, but it is really the prefecture which manages the situation from A to Z. We are monitoring any possible invasions. To date, we are not seeing more than before.
Commentary Do you watch for the presence of wild animals?
We are monitoring it via Allô Toulouse and the emails we receive. We do regular statistics, maps. In the event of any problem, we get in touch with the services of the prefecture.
