The Bergisel myth: Will Innsbruck decide on tour victory?
It is the most feared hill of the tour: The Bergisel in Innsbruck can awaken hope or make dreams burst.
On Tuesday lunchtime (live from 1.30 p.m. in the BR Livecenter) the ski jumpers are about to die and thus the penultimate hill of the tour. Those who are up here at the front, at least keep the prospect of a podium place upright.
The “Schicksalsberg” does not make it easy for its jumpers: A slight inclination of the table, a flat landing that makes landing difficult, difficult wind conditions and the small hill, where small differences in distance have a major impact on the ranking, pose problems for the jumpers.
DSV-Adler failed to Bergisel
For the DSV-Adler the Bergisel was recently more of a curse than a blessing. Martin Schmitt (98/99) and last season also Karl Geiger buried their hopes for a tour prematurely on Schicksalsberg. And Friday (2017/2018) and Severin Freund (2015/16) buried all their hopes for the tour victory after jumping in Innsbruck. But Friday doesn’t only have bad memories of the hill. He is the last German who could win in Innsbruck. But that was already seven years ago.
Widening like the last one in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, THERE WILL ALL be unlikely to happen. The hill record of the Austrian Michael Hayböck has been in place since 2015. He landed at 138m.
