Slovakia should be more involved in developments in Ukraine, says Cséfalvay
The former chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee considers it a strong moment for Slovakia last year to visit the Holy Father.
Slovak foreign policy should be more involved in development in Ukraine and the Western Balkans region. This was stated for TASR by Katarína Cséfalvayová, former chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council and vice-dean for foreign relations at the University of Economics in Bratislava, as part of the 2021 evaluation.
“Given its location, experience, knowledge of the situation and perception abroad, it can – and should – play an important role in such a dialogue,” Cséfalvay explained.
According to her, the performance of foreign policy is in professional hands, and positively evaluates the emphasis on value anchoring and the importance of the alliance within the EU and NATO.
She praised the assertive attitude of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Korcoko (SaS nominee) in relation to Hungary in connection with the purchase of real estate in Slovakia.
“A tone would be considered, and so must this mutual empathy, without the need to extract a cheap political body from an issue that can be explosive than many think,” she said.
Slovakia does not register a deterioration in Slovakia’s relations with another country, but it does not hide its fears of further developments in neighboring Ukraine. She reminded that the unity of the allies is important for the security of Slovakia.
“Therefore, I believe that the current tensions at the Ukrainian borders will be a demonstration of the unified position of European countries and the USA,” she said.
He considers the visit of the Holy Father to be a strong moment for Slovakia last year. According to some elections, they were important for Slovakia’s foreign policy in Germany or the Czech Republic.
“Coordination with the Czech Republic has always been important for Slovakia, so it is good that the new Czech government declares similar foreign policy goals as the Slovak one,” she said.
According to her, the year marked by the pandemic showed Slovakia’s dependence on the surrounding and global world. He also showed the many benefits that our country can derive from EU membership. In this context, she pointed out, for example, the provision and distribution of the vaccine, the support of healthcare and the increase of European money for Slovakia.
“This is also an area where we have been failing for a long time and we are not repaying funds, on the contrary, we are taking them back unused. That should change and it should also be the government’s top priority, especially in relation to the recovery plan, “she said.
