Paris: a ceiling collapses at the rue Barbanègre school
More fear than harm at the elementary school at 7, rue Barbanègre (19th century) where part of the ceiling collapsed on Tuesday morning around 10:30 am. “My daughter, who came down the stairs at recess, said to me: It fell right next to it ! »Testifies the father of a schoolgirl of CM2. The disaster did not cause any injuries “but it was played out very little”, adds this parent of a student. Classes resumed immediately and the canteen service was provided. Worried, the teachers seized the health and safety authorities of the rectorate.
Mayor of the 19th century, François Dagnaud (PS) explains: “2 or 3 m2 of ceiling fell on the 2nd floor in a place where we are under the roofs, precisely in a corridor which serves two unused classrooms”. According to the mayor, this school of the 1930s, which has about 250 students, has so far not experienced any structural disorder. Except “a heating failure just when it was cold at the beginning of December”, indicates a father.
To ensure that there is no risk of the accident happening again in another part of the building, François Dagnaud asked the city services to immediately carry out “a general check of the premises”. The mayor of the 19th century indicates: “At 4:15 pm this Tuesday afternoon, the ceiling was purged of any element that could come off. There are no more items that can fall. A tarpaulin was deployed on the zinc roof to prevent rainwater from continuing to infiltrate and flow onto the ground of the 1st floor ”.

Was the fall of this ceiling caused by water infiltration due to missing or weakened tiles? “The heavy rains of the weekend are very likely at the origin of the disaster”, estimates François Dagnaud who will go there this Wednesday morning. To determine the causes of the disaster, the mayor asked the services of the City to “reconstruct the course of what happened. Thus we will be able to understand why we did not anticipate this situation which could have had very serious consequences ”.
