EnigMalavita, the first “Escape Room” in a confiscated property in Genoa
The project is by a group of scouts: the goal is to get in touch with issues related to the fight against the mafias through a game experience. “Chira will be aware of the powerful role of organized crime in our territory and, above all, of the importance that the fight against the mafia has had, has and will have for all of us”
An Escape Room in a confiscated property in the historic center of Genoa. Is called”EnigMalavita“, A project born in September 2020 by a group of young people united by the scout experience in the Agesci Genova 13 group to offer everyone the opportunity to get in touch with issues related to the fight against mafias through a gaming experience. “It is the realization of a boy’s dream – explain the promoters -, which then became the dream of all of us. Stefano Matricardi has always been passionate about games of logic and, at the same time, very active in the fight against the mafia. For many he was a companion on the journey, for others a leader and an older brother, but he left everyone the spirit of initiative and service towards our society. Stefano was an example of integrity and active citizenship for young people. After the idea and setting up of a first mafia-themed Escape Room, Stefano fell ill with a brain tumor and passed away last March. Looking for a concrete way to remember him, we decided to carry on the idea of the Escape Room in a confiscated property in the historic center of Genoa “. So Stefano’s friends participated in a tender from the Municipality of Genoa through the patronage of the Tre Golfi Zone of the Agesci association and, in July 2021, they managed to get the management of an asset confiscated from the mafia.
As mentioned, the goal of the “EnigMalavita” project is to give everyone the opportunity to use the properties confiscated from the mafia, creating an internal experience to involve and raise awareness among citizens on issues related to organized crime. “Genoa – they explain -, port and point of contact for many cultures, also attracts the actions of organized crime. In our city there was the largest confiscation in Northern Italy: 115 assets taken from the Canfarotta family in 2009. These are not villas and large plots of land, but of deposits and residential buildings in poor condition. Most of these properties are located in the historic center of Genoa, in the alleys frequented by every Genoese. Our property is located in Vico Umiltà 4r, five minutes from the Cathedral. It is a small basement consisting of three rooms and a bathroom. After the celebrations for the assignment of the property, we clashed with the conditions of the property, to be completely renovated, from the floor to the systems. At the same time, its position and its characteristics make it perfect for our dream: to transform it into an Escape Room ”.
But what is an Escape Room? It is a logic game in which the competitors, locked up in a themed room, find a way out: to be able to successfully search for this mission, to search for logic and the team. Only one hour will be granted to solve all the puzzles whose solution will be able to access the next level and, finally, to exit the room. “Our intent is to convey to those who choose this experience the feeling of having experienced first hand the dynamics linked to the mafia, the awareness of its powerful role in our territory and above all the importance that the fight against organized crime has had, has had for all of us“.
To make Stefano’s dream come true, his friends launched a fundraising campaign: “Thanks to crowdfunding, start the renovation of the property. When the donors come to visit us to play in the Escape Room, the space will finally be ready, with a bathroom, a control room and rooms set up where it will be up to them and their team to extricate themselves from the world of the mafia. Once the donors’ help is received, the project will walk on its own feet. In fact, an exception of the expenses starts for which we ask everyone’s collaboration, we plan to self-finance the maintenance of the Escape Room with the proceeds of the game “.
