The Summer Olympics finally became a reality in 2021, and in 2022, perhaps the World Cup and the Winter Olympics will be the big thing for Norwegian sports lovers.
A number of venues are controversial, but here are some of the highlights of the 2022 sports year:
Soccer World Cup in winter
The World Cup in Qatar goes according to plan in the period November 21-18. December 2022.
The World Cup has been moved to Advent due to the extreme heat of the Persian Gulf in June-July.
Qatar has been reviewed for human rights, but no country will boycott the championship.
European champion Italia is not qualitative in advance, but has the chance in the playoffs for ours. Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal have the same, and of our neighbors, Sweden will be in the replay.
To the Olympics to bury gulls
Therese Johaug, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Halvor Egner Granerud and a bunch of other Norwegian gold candidates are going to China, where it is the Olympics between 4 and 20 February.
The Olympics have been debated both because of the corona and human rights, but all indications are that it will be winter games this year.
Viktor Hovland and the fire business
If he stays injury-free, the 24-year-old will be in action almost all of 2022. But the most important tournaments are the big four, where he has never been in the top 10.
It starts with the Masters at the Augusta Track April 7 to 10, continues with the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, Oklahoma May 19-22, then the US Open at Brookline, Massachusetts June 16-19. June and finally The Open – or British Open as many of us call it – on St Andrew’s 14-17. July.
Casper Ruud and the Fire Department
Casper Ruud had a tremendously impressive 2021 and has reached number one in the world. But he has continued to benefit from advancing beyond the 4th round of the four most prestigious tournaments, called the Grand Slam.
Australian Open plays in Melbourne 17-30. January, the French Open on the gravel in Paris from May 16 to June 5, the Wimbledon tournament on grass from June 27 to July 10 and finally the US Open in New York August 29 to September 11.
Ski flying in Vikersund
One of the biggest championships on Norwegian soil in 2022 is the World Ski Flying Championships in Vikersund. For some of the jumpers, it is even bigger than the Olympics. Norway won the team competition in 2016, 2018 and 2020, and in 2018 Daniel-André Tande won individually.
Time: 10. – 13. March.
Formula 1
It was an insane duel between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton for the World Cup title in 2021. Should we experience the same in 2022? Or can the Ferrari duo or other drivers take the step up? Remember that there are completely new rules for the cars in Formula 1 in 2022 – therefore a lot can change in the balance of power between the teams.
The first race takes place in Bahrain on March 20 and the last in Abu Dhabi on November 20.
Many championships
The championships in athletics have piled up for Karsten Warholm, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and the others. After the Olympics in 2021, it is both the European Championships and the World Cup in 2022.
They run the World Cup in Eugene, USA from July 15 to 24.
The European Championships take place in Munich from 15 to 21 August.
The Indoor World Cup will take place in Belgrade from 18 to 20 March.
Finally the European Championships
When the men’s European Championship was postponed from 2020 to 2021, it was also decided that the women’s football European Championship should be moved to 2022. Now it is finally ready for the championship in England from 6 to 31 July.
Caroline Graham Hansen and Norway are in the pool with the hosts England, Austria and Northern Ireland.
And as usual, the big question is: Will Ada Hegerberg return to the national team?
New handball championships
The women’s handball championship has been moved forward in relation to what we are used to: the European Championships take place from 4 to 20. November in the Balkans: Slovenia, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro
The European Championships for men will be held in Slovakia and Hungary from 13 to 30 January.
Hockey in Finland
The 2022 Ice Hockey World Cup will be played between 13 and 29. May in the two Finnish cities of Tampere and Helsinki.
Norway’s group plays in Tampere. The other teams are the hosts Finland, USA, Czech Republic, Sweden, Latvia, Belarus and Great Britain.
The golden guys to Rome
Norway’s gold winners in beach volleyball from the Tokyo Olympics, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, will in addition to the world series play the World Cup in Rome 7 to 19 June and the European Championships in Munich 15 to 21 August.
The Olympic winner is running on
Kristian Blummenfelt won Olympic gold and seriously put triathlon on the Norwegian sports map.
The Triathlon World Cup Series takes place at the following locations in 2022: Yokohama (May 14-15), Leeds (June 11-12), Montreal (June 22-26), Hamburg (July 9-10) , Chengdu (October 22-23), Abu Dhabi (November 2-5).
Tour start in Copenhagen
The Tour de France field will be sent by farms from Copenhagen in 2022, and the first three stages of the world’s largest cycling race will take place on Danish soil.
Tadej Pogacar will try to win his third straight Tour in the days 1 to 24 July.
The Tour de France Femmes runs July 24-31.
Champions League final
Our cup game in the Champions League got off to a heavy start as the draw had to be redone recently.
Regardless: The final will take place on May 28 at what is now called Gazprom Arena in St. Petersburg.
Will it be Paris Saint-Germain? Or Real Madrid? Bayern Munich? Or will it be English winner again – Chelsea, Manchester City or Liverpool?
Para-championship
Jesper Saltvik Pedersen, Vilde Nilsen, Birgit Skarstein and the other Norwegian winter aces will have two major championships in just a few months. 8. – 23. January is the Ski World Cup in Lillehammer, then it is the Winter Paralympics in China from 4 to 13 March.
Special Olympics Winter Games take place in Kazan, Russia 22-28. January.
