Solar Magazine – The Netherlands 25 percent more electricity with solar panels, more than 33 percent of electricity is sustainable
Last calendar year, the Netherlands produced 25 percent more solar energy due to the number of solar panels. The share of sustainable electricity is from 26.3 to 33.4 percent.
Offshore wind is responsible for the largest growth with 30 percent. Biomass was good for a growth of 17 percent in 2021. Finally, the production of onshore wind turbines decreased slightly. The installed capacity was indeed insufficient to cover the lack of wind compared to last year. All this is apparent from the annual figures of Energieopwek.nl.
12.5 percent
In the Climate Agreement, the Netherlands has set a sustainable date in 2030 that the share of electricity must be on average 70 percent. That is now 33.4% and of all energy – not just electricity – now more than 12.5% comes from renewable sources. Renewable electricity is only a part of the total renewable energy. The final energy consumption in the Netherlands consists of 3 components; 55 percent from heat for buildings and industry, 25 percent from transport in the form of road and air traffic and finally from 20 percent from electricity consumption.

With the installed solar energy per inhabitant, the Netherlands is now in second place worldwide. neighboring Germany has surpassed and only Australia has more solar capacity per inhabitant.
weather dependence
The dependence on weather is clearly reflected in the annual figures of Energieopwek.nl. The calendar year 2021 is going through high peaks and deep troughs. The best day for wind and solar energy was July 29 with over 177 gigawatt hours; good for almost 60 percent of the total Dutch electricity consumption that day. The low point was on December 17. With the 5.7 gigawatt-hours that were then generated, less than 2 percent of the Dutch electricity demand could be served.
Biomass important
About half of the total renewable mix consists of biomass. Solar, wind and other sources will supply the other half of the renewable production in 2021.
Almost 25 percent of the biomass share is biofuel that is blended in. More than 15 percent is owned by co-firing in coal-fired power stations. In addition, biomass is used at home in the form of fireplaces and pellet stoves and in heat networks and at companies. This is 35 percent of the total. Biogas installations and waste plants use about 25 percent.
