Portugal cannot go from crisis to crisis with two-year provisional governments, says Costa – Politics
The PS secretary general announced this Monday that the country’s sustained economic growth is incompatible with frequent political crises in the country and with “two-year provisional governments” and considered essential the existence of a policy.
This position was conveyed by António Costa at the end of the speech with which he ended the presentation of the general lines of the PS electoral program – a session that took place at Parque Mayer, in Lisbon.
In the more political part of his speech, the socialist leader defended that Portugal has “a very important set of tasks ahead of it: to win the pandemic, focus on recovery and have the ambition to progress and go beyond”.
“For this to be possible, a government that looks to the country and maintains policy stability over the next four years is necessary,” he said, leaving after a warning.
“To respond to these challenges, we cannot go from crisis to crisis, we cannot live in two-year provisional governments. We need a stable government for the next four years”, specials.
According to António Costa, the PS presents itself to the anticipated legislative advantages of January 30th “to ensure stability in the country, but also to respond to concrete commitments in relation to the families and companies that were included in the [chumbado] State Budget for 2022”.
“We already know that, without a majority of the PS, these commitments cannot pass through the Assembly of the Republic. It is necessary to focus on recovery for this, stability is necessary”, he argued, in an intervention in which he promised to restore retroactively to January 1st this year all the measures that were part of the failed Budget, namely regarding pensions and tax relief.
