More than 11 million passengers on the Lisbon Metro with the extension of the Red line. Locations of new stations are already known – News
In a statement, Metropolitano de Lisboa (ML) indicates that it has completed the Preliminary Study phase of the extension of the Red line for the purposes of the Environmental Impact Assessment and submitted to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), on December 27, the Process of Environmental Licensing related to this study.
According to ML, the extension of the Red line between São Sebastião and Alcântara should start from the already built area, located after the São Sebastião station, through a tunnel section built next to the Palace of Justice and which will have a total length of about four kilometers, including about 380 meters of viaduct.
“Along the route of the double lane tunnel, the construction of three new underground stations (Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique and Infante Santo) and one aboveground station (Alcântara) are foreseen”, is mentioned in the note.
Amoreiras station, according to the same information, will be located along Rua Conselheiro Fernando Sousa, close to its intersection with Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, and is expected to be built in the open, and will be 18.5 meters deep. , and Campo de Ourique under the Teófilo Braga Garden / Jardim da Parada, at a depth of 31 meters and three access points.
The Infante Santo station will be located between this Avenue and Calçada das Necessidades, on municipal land that has not been built up and free of any construction and will have a depth of 29.5 meters and two accesses.
As for the Alcântara station, ML wants it to be located on the west side of Praça General Domingos de Oliveira, on the Access Road to the 25 de Abril Bridge. Its boundaries will be Rua da Quinta do Jacinto to the north, Calçada da Tapada and Rua de Alcântara to the south and Praça General Domingos de Oliveira to the east.
“The installation of the station is not only fixed by the limits built above, as well as by future reservations, namely, the IP railway tunnel (integration of the Cascais Line into the Belt Line), the new roundabout in Alcântara (provided for in the Plan of Alcântara Urbanization) and all the technical constraints of road and rail layouts”, highlights the company.
The ML specifies that the “new Viaduct will cross the valley of Alcântara, between the Baluarte do Livramento and the Alcântara station, and will be implemented in such a way as not to contradict existing conditions or the versatility of future developments at the site”.
The company also adds that it will clean, protect and refurbish the outer and inner walls of the Baluarte do Livramento.
In the statement, ML says that within the scope of the development of the Environmental Impact Study, ML consulted 41 entities/companies to obtain information on the register of infrastructures in the intervention area of the present project and its surroundings, in the municipality of Lisbon, or in other information considered relevant for the development of the study.
ML recalls that the extension of the Red line is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) 2021-2026, with financing totaling 304 million euros.
“The expectation is that this extension of the red line will be open for competition in the year 2022 and that it will be a reality in 2025/2026”, adds ML.
According to the company, the studies carried out indicate that the daily fare collected at the four stations that make up this extension will correspond to an increase in the first year, after entry into operation, of 11 million passengers (4.7%) throughout the network.
“Awaiting a 30-year analysis, the benefits generated by this Red line project amount to 1,047 million euros. The new configuration of the Red line will manage to remove 3.7 thousand individual vehicles from daily circulation in Lisbon, which means less 6.2 thousand tons of CO2 in the first year of operation”, highlights ML.
