Historic gold at Kata World Cup in Lisbon
Although it has already been, nobody can have missed it: Erik Faes and Niels Neumann became the first Dutch kata couple ever to become world champion on October 26, 2021 in the Nage No Kata. Earlier this year they became European champions for the second time. In the preliminary round, this couple placed third in their group, just behind the French and Colombians. They were closely followed by a Brazilian couple who just didn’t manage to place themselves. Although these two Brabant judoka already see a good kata in the preliminary round, they recognize that they can outdo themselves in the final. Under the watchful eye of National Coach Sander Stammers (former participant, two-time European champion Kime No Kata) they rose above themselves and put down an excellent kata. The hard work was rewarded with a gold medal. The joy of both judoka was enormous. National coach Stammers and the rest of the Dutch meeting were also in ecstasy. Once back in the Netherlands, both judoka were honored in various places and they did not lack attention. The Dutch judo sport can be proud of two of these toppers. After all, one can expect many more prizes from them in the future.
The Dutch delegation also consisted of: Maik van der Hulst/Kevin van der Hulst (Nage No Kata, preliminaries), Tycho van der Werff/David Lefevere (Katame No Kata, 4th place finals), Marie-José Nieuwenhuizen/Irene Suurland (June No Kata, preliminaries), Mischa Fransen/Yoeri Fransen (Kime No Kata, preliminaries), Ruud van Zwieten (COVID manager), Johan Slof (chairman NWKCJ), Trudie Michielsen (international kata jury member), Olaf van Geel (international kata jury member)
