The Netherlands is allowed to send the maximum number of crossers to the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Fayetteville. This is according to data from the UCI. The KNWU may send seven riders in each age category. Belgium is allowed to send the maximum number of riders in three of the six types.
After thirteen rounds in the Cyclo-cross World Cup, the UCI has drawn up a ranking, on the basis of which the numbers of starting places at the Cyclo-cross World Cup are determined. The Netherlands is among the elite men, elite women and U23 women in the top-3. Belgium is only in the top-3 among the elite men. Belgian Cycling is therefore allowed to send ‘only’ six riders to the elite women and the U23 women.
The junior men, junior women and U23 men have only raced three World Cups so far. Based on that ranking, the start is divided for the World Cup. The Netherlands is in the top 3 everywhere and can therefore go to America with seven in all categories. Belgium is in the top-3 in the men’s juniors and the U23 men, and only fifth in the women’s juniors.
Individual pointers
And then there are individual pointers. The Netherlands may add Mathieu van der Poel, Lucinda Brand, Fem van Empel and Pim Ronhaar to the World Cup selection anyway, because they became world champions in 2021.
Continental champions are also automatically qualified for the Cyclo-cross World Championships. That is good news for Lars van der Haar (European champion elite men), Shirin van Anrooij (European champion U23 women), Ryan Kamp (European champion U23 men). With the Belgians Aaron Dockx (European champion junior men) is already certain of the World Cup and with the British Zoe Bäckstedt (European champion junior women).
In addition, federations may automatically register the final winners of the World Cup, in all national countries, for the World Cup. The final standings will be announced on January 23, a week before the world championship, after the heat in Hoogerheide. Among the elite men, the winner is already known: Eli Iserbyt.
