Toulouse: Matabiau station under construction in 2021, the Tour Occitanie project still docked
Closure of one in every two underground passages from January and of the heart of the station in April, 2022 will be the year of major works for the Matabiau station. The Tour Occitanie project is on standby, pending decisions on legal remedies.
The renovation work on Toulouse’s main station will enter its most spectacular phase in January 2022. Accessibility, creation of a service center and a shopping mall on the program for final delivery in September 2023.
On the other hand, we are still waiting for the Tour Occitanie project. The 150 m high skyscraper must rise on SNCF land between the station and the media library. The promoter, the Compagnie de Phalsbourg, declares that it is waiting for all appeals for cancellation of the building permit to be served.
The northern underground passage closed for 18 months
The most spectacular work on the site launched by SNCF Gares & Connexion will begin in January 2022 with the closure for 18 months of the North underpass which currently provides access to the platforms. Passengers will use the southern underpass during these works to access the platforms by fixed stairs.
The North underpass will be twice as wide in September 2023 (from 4.50m currently to 9m) and linked by escalators to the platforms. Ultimately, five new elevators and five new escalators will make the station perfectly accessible to everyone, with sound terminals to guide the visually impaired.
The heart of the station closed in April
From April 2022, the heart of the station will also be closed for works, until June 2023, to allow the creation of a “passenger gallery” in place of the current sales area between halls 1 and 2. This will accommodate new businesses, some of which will have open terraces on the forecourt. After the works, Matabiau will thus accommodate around fifteen retailers compared to the current eight (i.e. 2,700 m2 instead of 1,300 m2 today).
On the first floor, a catering and reception area of 250 m2, panoramic, accessible by lift, will offer a view of the station square and the vast renovated hall. In January 2023, it will be the turn of halls 1 and 2 to be renovated. The entire renovation is estimated at 42 million euros, for delivery in September 2023.
