There was an impenetrable cloud of fog around the area. That didn’t stop them, however. Katyusha sounded, several thousand cannons and mortars roared with fire and 1,600,000 soldiers rushed to first base. The Red Army was moving north to attack Działdowo and Olsztyn.

People were running away from them.
On Monday, January 22, 1945, the soldiers of Oslikowski’s Cavalry Corps approached Olsztyn, i.e. Allenstein. Residents on their feet. Through the megaphone there was a message that soldiers are coming, who will not continue to walk about anything, for an equal purpose.
People packed what they had at hand and left their homes to save their lives. The only escape.
Granny only had as many guns as he put in his briefcase. She took all the keys, but left the door to the apartment open, because the Russians did not have to destroy them. far away in the things she took from Olsztyn, there was a family album with photos dating back to the 19th century – recalled Catrin Collier, a Welsh writer whose family came from Olsztyn
The city suffered badly from this attack. 1,040 buildings were destroyed, i.e. about 36% of the city’s buildings. Factories, factories and production plants were destroyed. The machines and railroads they managed were sent deep into the USSR.
Red Army cleaning stopped by one target – East Prussia with German cleaning and their maintenance. They were determined by their goal and their victory over the Germans.
For the Red Army soldiers, Prussia was the first enemy territory they entered. They came there as winners. You are on the first scrap of land – the German, the officer told the soldiers – look for the Germans for the execution and repair the land, take revenge for our burned houses, battered mothers, wives and your girlfriends – explained Dr. Feliks Walichnowski, a sociologist from Olsztyn
The Soviet soldiers did not wonder who they had in front of them. Niemca, Warmiak or Mazur, in their eyes each of them was a supporter of Hilter, whose place of origin fell asleep.
