The heat records were also broken on New Year’s Day
Budapest – Like New Year’s Eve, the capital’s and the national heat record was broken on New Year’s Day, with 101-year highs in the past, the National Meteorological Service said on its Facebook page on Saturday afternoon.
Until now, the exact temperature on January 1 was 15.3 degrees Celsius, which was measured in 1921 in Sopron. Higher values were recorded at a total of 52 stations across the country, more than 2 degrees. 17.4 degrees were measured in Sümeg, Veszprém county, and 17.5 degrees in Főnyed, Somogy county.
Budapest was still the warmest on January 1, 1921, when it was 13 degrees on Gellért Hill. Now the meteorological service registered 14.2 degrees in Újpest and Ferihegy and 14.4 degrees in Lágymányos.
Even on New Year’s Day, the daily heat records were broken. On Friday, Pestszentlőrinc was the hottest in the capital, measuring 15.4 degrees. Previously, the New Year’s Eve national heat record was measured in 1921, also in Sopron. On the last day of 2021, however, 18 degrees were measured in Fertőrákos, Győr-Moson-Sopron County.
It is predicted that in the coming days, values above 10 degrees may still be measured in several places, but in many places the air will only heat up to 5 degrees. A stronger cooling is expected in the second half of next week.
