VIDEO The message of President Maia Sandu on the occasion of the New Year
Dear friends,
2021 was a complicated year, but also a good one. It was a year of change and challenge, a year in which the people of our country demonstrated resilience, maturity and wisdom, a year in which people became masters of their country again.
In 2021, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova managed to oust a whole generation of corrupt politicians. Three or four years ago, few would have imagined that this was possible. Today, the impossible and reality.
These changes have brought us worldwide fame. Thus, after years of international isolation, we have rebuilt relationships of trust and mutual respect with several countries around the world. We have restored good relations with our neighbors: Romania and Ukraine. I put the Republic of Moldova back on the map of Europe. We began to be respected.
Many of those who came to politics just to get rich have left the public space. Some of them have the illusion that the changes made by the citizens are just an accident and even more so, far from the country or at home, to prevent reforms, to save their wealth accumulated through theft. But they are fundamentally wrong. The people’s choice for a prosperous, just, honest work is irreversible.
We started fighting the big corrupt – slower than we wanted and harder than we thought. However, the law enforcement agencies started working. It is important that prosecutions are properly conducted by prosecutors. It is equally important that cases be tried in accordance with the law in court. It is important that we move forward with the reform of the judiciary so that those who rule will be good professionals and act in the public interest and in the spirit of the law.
This year, we found solutions for the Covid-19 pandemic. Shortly after the start of vaccination in the world, we managed to bring to the Republic of Moldova the help of the vaccine and from Romania and other partners. Today we have enough vaccines to protect against serious cases and to save lives. In countries with high vaccination rates, mortality from Covid is low. That is why I urge you to get vaccinated again. In Moldova, the pandemic took over 9,600 lives, each of them – a man dear to someone. By getting vaccinated, we save our lives and the lives of those around us.
2021 has been a challenging year. This year, we have been on the verge of rising prices on the global market, especially for natural gas. We are once again convinced of the importance of the country’s security and energy efficiency. In the coming years, we will invest in projects to diversify energy sources and increase energy efficiency. I know that increased gas and heating bills are too high for the modest incomes of most citizens. The government has allocated resources to partially offset tariff increases and mitigate the impact on citizens’ pockets. It is not much, but it is a proof that the state can and must help its citizens in difficult situations. This is what we are working for: to create a strong state, in solidarity with its citizens.
Guided by this thought, we increased, from October, the minimum pension for the full internship to 2000 lei and we increased the pensions and allowances for several hundred thousand people. The government has increased salaries for some categories of state employees. In the coming years, we need to develop a system for motivating public employees, which does not allow us to build a functional, efficient state that works for the people.
But the Republic of Moldova can prosper only with a strong and vigorous economy. That is why, in the coming years, we will work to attract investment, create jobs and develop infrastructure. The status must be a reliable partner of the business environment, to help entrepreneurs to realize their ideas and to increase the well-being of the country.
Dear citizens,
We are going through uncertain times. The whole world is undergoing major political, economic, social and technological changes. These changes bring new challenges and opportunities. We must learn to use them to our advantage. And I’m sure we’ll make it. Throughout history, we have shown that we can be reborn in terrible times. Repression, deportations and famine have not failed to break the spirit. Migration in recent decades has shown us that molds can assert themselves in any condition and in any country, through hard work. If we manage to overcome such difficulties, as a people, we will succeed in not cutting the path further.
The greatest wealth of a country is its people. The Republic of Moldova must take care of its citizens, invest in people. We need to prepare the next generation to adapt to a changing world. We need visionary minds that do not move forward. Education, culture, science are
the key to a good future. By investing in these areas, we are investing in the well-being and future of our children.
Climate change does not affect everyone, both large and small. The Republic of Moldova is no exception. We must be careful to preserve nature and not to green the land
