Mont-Joli celebrates a page in its history
(2021 retrospective) -SEPTEMBER-The City of Mont-Joli announces, on September 12, the name of a new street in homage to one of those who contributed to the construction of the Sanatorium Saint-Georges, which became the Sanatorium de Mont-Joli and subsequently the Mont-Joli hospital center.
The municipal council unanimously endorsed the recommendation of the toponymy committee behind the name of the founder of the Sanatorium Saint-Georges, now the Mont-Joli hospital, to designate the new street of the Beaupré residential development. , Georges-Henri-De Champlain.
“We had a duty to remember Mr. De Champlain, a great Mont-Jolien, a visionary. His legacy still constitutes a major contribution to our city today, both in the field of health and from an economic point of view. The creation of a new street, in the extension of Beaupré street, allows us to finally inscribe his name in the collective memory ”, underlined the mayor of the City of Mont-Joli, Martin Soucy.

The City thus recalls the career of Georges-Henri De Champlain: “Died prematurely at the age of 41, Georges-Henri De Champlain nevertheless had time to mark a long-lasting journey. His main achievement was to design the project for a sanatorium in Mont-Joli. Himself suffering from tuberculosis, he scaffolded this idea during a stay at the Lac-Édouard sanatorium, in the region of Quebec in 1936. Barely recovered from the disease, in January 1937, he began with courage and determination to multiple steps for the construction of a sanatorium in his own city. His efforts were not in vain and culminated on July 30, 1939 with the opening of the Sanatorium Saint-Georges. “
Mr. De Champlain has also distinguished himself by his social commitment within the Mont-Jolienne community. He was municipal councilor from 1939 to 1946, president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Caisse populaire and founding member of the local Club Richelieu. He founded and of the Mont-Joli school scholarships committee.
