Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considers that Portugal is “going to endemic”
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered, this Friday, that the country is moving from a pandemic to an endemic one and has reduced the number of deaths and hospitalized patients, compared to last year.
“The number of deaths is a third of a year and the number of intensive care is a quarter of a year and the number of deaths is a quarter of a year,” he said, in a statement to journalists in Costa da Caparica.
The head of state, who “we must have, of course, precautions and common sense”, but who “we have gradually got used to living with this phenomenon”.
“We are passing to the endemic. The pandemic is still there, but we have already passed to the endemic”, he considered.
On the possible postponement of the return to school, scheduled for January 10, the President of the Republic referred the decision to the Government.
“After hearing the experts, it is necessary to leave this decision depending on what happens in a week to a week and a half. There is nothing like following the evolution of the situation to make decisions”, he said.
It should be noted that the director-general of Health, Graças Freitas, considered it “premature” on Thursday night to say that the measures implemented during the containment period – between December 25th and January 9th – “will all fall to January, 10 “.
