Four Hills Tournament: Floodlights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Is the night tour coming?
The new floodlights catch the eye in the qualifying for the New Year’s competition – and the Innsbruck Bergisel should also be upgraded accordingly. The complete Four Hills Tournament could soon take place in the evening.
It was actually still bright as day when it suddenly got a little brighter at the Olympic hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: During the qualification for the New Year’s competition (event overview with schedule & information), the newly installed floodlights illuminated the hill for the first time during the Four Hills Tournament.
In the last few years the lighting conditions here have often caused errors – earlier at 4:30 p.m., the New Year’s competition should be over. With the new floodlight system there is now even the option of putting the traditional jumping into the evening hours right from the start.

This makes the Bergisel in Innsbruck the last of the four ski jumping hills that is not yet equipped with floodlights. But that too is set to change soon: “The official procedures are still ongoing. If everything goes as planned, a floodlit competition can take place for the first time in 2023 or 2024. A jump starting at 4:30 p.m. would have the advantage that there is usually no wind in the evening on Bergisel ”, said OK boss Alfons Schranz of the“ Tiroler Tageszeitung ”.
It is also conceivable that the Four Hills Tournament will soon be a night or at least an evening tour: the first jump in Oberstdorf and Bischofshofen will only start at 4:30 p.m. at dusk and end when it is completely dark. In addition to better conditions – at least in the case of Innsbruck – the organizers are also likely to be interested in television: in the evening, higher audiences and ratings can be achieved.
