COVID-19’s new Lockdown will starve us, warns Malta Hotel Association Chief
As Malta faces a new period of uncertainty over COVID-19, the president of the Malta Hotel and Restaurant Association has warned that a third lockdown to contain the virus could mean death for crucial industry.
“If more measures are introduced, we will be sending a clear signal that we do not need to strengthen because everything is for nothing,” said Tony Zahra when interviewed by Newsbook On Wednesday.
“I am making it clear; we would be sending a signal that all this is in vain. That’s why we can all stop and lock everyone in the house without the need for people to take the booster because it’s all for naught. ”
“It simply came to our notice then. You are going to starve us to death. ”
Noting studies that Omicron is less severe than previous versions of the virus, Zahra said the virus can now be described as “any other flu”.
SMES House Chief Executive Abigail Mamo also warned that Malta “will not be able to cope” with new measures to curb the virus and that the government should instead focus on enforcing current measures.
The director general of the Malta Employers Association, Joseph Farrugia, said that any new measures must be “realistic” and properly enforced.
Malta has seen an unprecedented increase in COVID-19 cases in recent days, with more than 10,000 people currently positive for the virus. However, hospital admissions remained relatively stable and only six people who tested positive for COVID-19 are currently receiving intensive care.
