You led the Capitol Orchestra Fr 2018 and 2019: whats memorys do you keep any?
Dwonderful memories! From the first meeting – it was already for Tchaikovsky –, I found in front of me formidable musicians, full of energy, who were hungry for new approaches. I found all these qualities this week : these works that they know by heart, they were quite willing to talk about them, to consider other colors …
Do you conduct a New Year’s concert like you do on any other day of the year?
The moment is special, of course: people dress well, want ferryman an exceptional evening – especially today … Pour as much, the work remains the same. It is the idea of ending the year that is important; you might as well do it with these works, which everyone loves. “The Nutcracker” is arguably the most performed play in Russia – and elsewhere – on December 31 …
Tchaikovsky is in the spotlight: like you, he comes from Saint Petersburg …
I have conducted all his symphonies, his ballets, half of his operas. Of course he played a major role in my apprenticeship years, but Tchaikovsky is, I would say, international. It is, in my opinion, the best gateway to introduce someone to classical music. His music goes straight to the heart.
Does interpreting ballets without dancers require the imagination of the spectator, so that he “sees” the story while listening? the music ?
Absoutely. I’ve done this before, and it works pretty well. This music is so expressive that it conveys a lot of images and emotions. It is also much easier for us, the musicians, because we have a greater freedom: we do not have to follow the principal dancer, to know if she is sick or just late! (laughs)
Comment bring your “paw” to these two masterpieces so known ?
I don’t want to “bring” anything! I just want to get as close as possible to the idea of the composer, to thrill the orchestra and the spectators. We are going to play these songs three times and I can guarantee you that these three times will all be different: the energy of the audience, the envy of the orchestra, the weather, whatever else… it all affects the interpretation. . This is why it is so important to play in concert. I gave so many concerts last year in empty halls… It was sad. This is why I am so happy to spend these end-of-year celebrations here, in Toulouse, with this orchestra that I love so much!
