San Marino joins Irena, the International Agency for Renewable Energy
The Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat of State for Labor announce that, having concluded the accession process started in 2020, from today the Republic of San Marino has formally joined IRENA, the International Agency for Renewable Energy. IRENA is an intergovernmental organization founded in Bonn, Germany, on January 26, 2009, with operational headquarters in Masdar City (Abu Dhabi), which aims to support countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and represents the reference point for international cooperation on the subject, as well as being the main center of excellence at a global level. With the accession of San Marino, the Agency currently has 167 member states and 17 acceding states. The Entity promotes the use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar and wind energy and provides support and services to Governments that intend to apply enabling policies for investments in renewable energy, providing practical tools for accelerate the spread of clean energy and facilitate knowledge sharing and technology transfer. In addition to IRENA’s recent active participation in the COP and SDG summits, which the Republic of San Marino is following with interest, as well as a number of other global processes, the recognition of IRENA’s leading role in renewable energy is also exemplified by its contribution to Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the G7 and the mandate received from the G20 Energy Ministers to coordinate the G20 Toolkit of voluntary options for the deployment of renewable energy. The agency also works closely with a number of strategic partners, ranging from the local to the international level. “With this important adhesion – declared the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari – the panorama of active participation at multilateral level on the main global challenges, such as the transition towards a more sustainable energy system, is enriched.” “San Marino is already committed internally and on this issue, – continued the Secretary of State for Labor Teodoro Lonfernini – this Executive already has development projects in the pipeline. Participation in the work of this international organization represents a forum for comparison and debate to share best practices on the subject. “
