“Speed pack” too slow for 2021

The bill for the second part of the “speeding package” is no longer to be presented this year, as announced. For example, a vehicle withdrawal is planned in the event of extreme speeding. The penalties for driving fast were increased significantly in September.
On September 1, 2021, the first part of the amendment to the law on the “speeder package” came into force. The changes in the road traffic regulations and in the driving license law mainly related to the excessive exceeding of the speed limit. The penalties for serious violations were sometimes more than double, for example the maximum from 2,180 to 5,000 euros fine. The minimum amounts for driving too fast have also been doubled.
The demand comes mainly from Salzburg
The second part of the package of measures against extreme frenzy should now be finished quickly, according to the country’s tourist office. In severe cases, a car inspection is anchored in it. ÖVP Provincial Councilor Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP) and Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) had been working together for almost a year. By the end of 2021, Gewessler had promised the second “speed pack”. The state’s tourist office and the ministry of transport say that it is currently still in the legal details.
National Council is asked for vehicle withdrawal
Removing the car from speeding is a stronger encroachment on the rights of a citizen, and it will probably also need a constitutional majority in the National Council for the law to be passed. The Ministry of Transport is currently agreeing details within the coalition as well as with the federal states and the Ministry of the Interior, says the spokesman for Schnöll Transport Council, Fabian Scharler.
Driving license withdrawal should also be possible
In addition, Schnöll demands that the driver’s license must be removed from the lawn. So far, this is still at the discretion of the police. The Ministry of Transport will not answer any detailed questions at the moment. The law is about to be assessed, it is said.
