Peab is building the Tullgarnsbron over the Fyrisälven river in Uppsala
Sweden’s Uppsala municipality has hired the construction company Peab to build the Tullgarnsbron over Fyris å.
The contract is worth up to USD 17.29 million (SEK 157 million).
The customs yarn bridge, as part of the infrastructure expansion in Uppsala, is an important development underway on the south side of the city.
It will function as a connection to the residential areas in Kungsängen with Studenternas IP, a multi-stadium, Stadsträdgården and Uppsala Akademiska sjukhus.
It is the third movable bridge that Peab is building for Uppsala municipality, after Vindbron and Flottsundsbron.
Peab’s product manager Thomas Larsson said: “We look forward to working together with Uppsala Municipality again and start building the Tullgarnsbron.
“The bridge is a vital part of Uppsala’s community development and we hope that we can reduce the congestion on the city’s other bridges across the river and create better accessibility for Uppsala residents.”
According to the company, the Tullgarnsbron will be built as a bascule bridge over the Fyrisälven river.
It will have connecting roads, as well as pedestrian and bicycle paths.
With a total length of 60 meters, the Customs Bridge will have a car lane in each direction. There will also be a four-meter-wide pedestrian and bicycle path on its sides.
It will have a special design where the blade that lifts will be constructed entirely of corten steel.
This link sheet will be built in concrete but in corten form. Furthermore, spacers will be clad in granite.
According to the company, the vertical lift will be “unusual” because it would be opened and closed by “rope machinery in one of the bridge supports”.
Uppsala Municipality’s project manager Stefan Bergerstam said: “Now that the procurement process is over, we are entering the next step in the project that builds the Customs Yarn Bridge and the connecting streets.
“The bridge also makes it possible to reduce traffic in parts of the city center. For Uppsala municipality, the Customs Bridge and its design will create a landmark in the city. ”
Peab noted that bridge planning will begin immediately, with construction starting in January next year.
Completion of Tullgarn Bridge is expected in 2023.
