GAS fines of 350 for those who set off fireworks and mutual coordination of the law in the streets: this is how Antwerp police prepares for the New Year | Antwerp
AntwerpThere are those who watch a movie on New Year’s Eve, but a lot of people like to go out to celebrate the start of the new year. Traditionally, there is tumult in the police as much as possible: “Fireworks are banned and we perform where public rust is disturbed.”
Together with the Christmas market, the annual fireworks festival on the banks of the Scheldt fell into the water. In a number of coastal cities, New Year’s Eve becomes a completely fireworks-free night in the city of biscuits: “It is prohibited in Antwerp to light fireworks without permission,” says Wouter Bruyns of the Antwerp police. “Until the end of January, it is also not allowed to carry fireworks in a public place, and there will be extra checks.”
Anyone caught with fireworks in their pocket can expect a GAS fine of 350 euros: “Minors can count on a home visit in addition to a GAS fine. Youth intervention and the mediation teams have already obtained 92 young people for a home visit this year. Between November 3 and December 10, 72 suspects who fired fireworks or had in their pocket have already been identified. Most of them are between 12 and 17 years old, with an average age of 15 years. A minority of 8% is of age.”
Violence will not be tolerated like rodents
The police will also be extra visible on New Year’s Eve: “Many police officers, medical efforts and firefighters will spend the festive night at the service of the population,” continues Bruyns. “Among others, neighborhood teams, bicycle teams, intervention teams and the mobile unit will patrol for a safe course.” Furthermore, Bruyns points to everyone’s common sense: “It goes without saying that it is irresponsible to get behind the wheel after alcohol. There will also be extra supervision there.”
Catering establishments that do not adhere to the closing time of 11 p.m. will be fined like redheads: “We ask to be considerate of other local residents and to avoid all forms of nuisance, such as loud music, even after 11 p.m. The police will also intervene where public order is disturbed. Violence will not be tolerated, like rodents,” Bruyns adds.
Then bowling fun for recreational users in Antwerp Amusement Center: “Parquet does not give us a definitive answer, so we will just open tomorrow”
