From Barnum to Japanese prints, the circus arts shine in Rouen in 6 exhibitions
In the Rouen metropolitan area, six exhibitions present the collection of Jeanne-Yvonne and Gérard Borg, as well as objects loaned by various museums, around the world of the circus. The “Circus and acrobats” exhibitions take place in the various museums of the Rouen Normandy metropolis until May 17th.
For six months, the Rouen agglomeration becomes the circus capital. Six exhibitions, in four different places, present the collection of Jeanne-Yvonne and Gérard Borg, supplemented by loans from French museums. The general theme is the circus world. But each distilled space is subject: habits of light at the Corderie Vallois industrial museum, Buffalo Bill at the Knowledge Factory, Japanese circus prints at the Beauvoisine pole, and the birth of the circus arts at the Fine Arts museum in Rouen.
The arrival of a circus in town
For this last exhibition, posters, objects, paintings, tell the story of the arrival of a circus in town with its parade and its parades of acrobats, the rise of the big top, then come the representations of acrobats and tamers of wild animals. – poor in the 19th century, happy when modern artists like Dufy, Bonnard, or Léger, paint these colorful shows.
A magical world
We learn how solid buildings were born in the middle of the 19th century, representing the shape of the Champs Élysées cirque by Hittorf, the architect of the winter circus. In short, we are immersed in this magical world, we learn a lot of things and we remain as blissful as children. The exhibition “Circus and acrobats” or “the” exhibitions “Circus and acrobats” take place in the various museums of the metropolis Rouen Normandy until May 17.
