Debut of ‘Glória’ on Netflix gives Portugal visibility in streaming
Glory was the first Portuguese series to reach the Netflix. The plot debuted in 190 countries and the impact of the platform is undeniable. streaming had in the project, as well as the doors it can open to national fiction. This premiere is the National Event of the Year for the newsroom to do Fact-scatters, taking into account a company in the areas of culture and entertainment.
It was on the 5th of November that Glory debuted on the platform of Netflix and, for ten episodes, we follow a story of suspense and espionage set in Portugal, during the Cold War. The action takes place in a small village in Ribatejo, Glória, where for decades an American broadcasting center – the RARET – which sent propaganda from the country to Eastern Europe.
The protagonist of the plot is the engineer john life (Miguel Nunes), member of a family linked to the Estado Novo, who is recruited by the KGB to carry out espionage missions. The series’ cast also includes names like Victoria War, Adriano Luz, Joana Ribeiro, Albano Jerónimo, Ines Castel-Branco and Sandra Faleiro.
The importance of Netflix no project
The author and screenwriter of the series Pedro Lopes account, in an interview with the newspaper Express, that the project was in the drawer for over ten years and that “It only makes sense to take it when there are conditions to be able to do it well”. The interest on the part of the Netflix endowed the team “The right financial means to do the job”, revelation the screenwriter, when he was present at this year’s edition of Comic Con Portugal.
the creator of Glory defends that, in the international market, “The difference is in the fashion shows”. “Series of this nature have a different level of care and reflection”, admits, so the platform support of streaming “Hiring that there was more time to write, to film, to art direction, prepare the recovery of buildings, decoration and rehearsals for the actors”.
Although the budget was not revealed, Pedro Lopes had already mentioned that “no other Portuguese series had such great production values ”. The official numbers, provided by the SPi nominates more than 150 actors (60 non-extras), more than 130 people in the team in the to define, filming in various parts of the country and around 20 companies involved in this project.
Also for the cast, the financing of the platform made possible a different experience from what they had until then. The protagonist, Miguel Nunes, brought the “The team was very large, a machine that had been assembled and a structure that [se não fosse pela Netflix], would not allow the series to incorporate this body so solid in terms of image, cast and production”.

As for Afonso Pimentel, working in fiction for this platform caused him some added pressure. “When I learned it was Netflix, obviously [senti] the weight of realizing that we had to do something special, for all the reasons and more: first, because it was Netflix; second, for being the first; and because we all wanted the obvious, which was that it wasn’t the last ”, explains.
Will there be a second season?
Despite not confirming a second season, Pedro Lopes believes that this possibility exists, since in Portugal the series reached the first place in the most watched contents of the giant of the streaming, in Luxembourg managed to reach the main and the world level reached 36th position. However, the creator states: “[a série] premiered a few months ago and we are still living in this moment”.
