Why Maia Sandu did not attend the CIS summit convened by Vladimir Putin
Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova, did not attend the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, in which President Vladimir Putin called for tighter laws between the former Soviet republics.
“We are not going to the summit. We analyze the participation in these meetings depending on the topics discussed and how relevant they are for the Republic of Moldova. At CIS, we are interested in economic issues. I don’t know what the agenda is. I haven’t seen an official invitation“, Said Maia Sandu, quoted by agora.md.
In fact, Maia Sandu stated that she met with some CIS leaders during the Eastern Partnership summit, which took place on December 15 in Brussels. Regarding the dialogue with the Russian Federation, the President of the Republic of Moldova said that bilateral talks are important.

The Kremlin’s presidential administration’s press service announced that, at the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, on December 28, the city of St. Petersburg will host a traditional informal meeting of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The Commonwealth of Independent States was formed 30 years ago and brings together the former Soviet republics, less the Baltic states, which became members of the EU, Georgia and Ukraine, which left the organization after the Russian aggression on their territories. Russia’s current allies in the former Soviet republics include Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia.
