Salzburg AG: “Bitter comparison to 2019”
business
While the Festungsbahn and Mönchsbergaufzug posted another strong minus in 2021, the Schafbergbahn and Wolfgangsee shipping ran noticeably better than in 2020, according to Salzburg AG Tourismus. But the record year 2019 is a long way off.
The operations on and around Lake Wolfgang ran quite satisfactorily in 2021, although they are still far from the record result of 2019, according to Salzburg AG. “We managed to achieve a 32 percent increase in promotions compared to previous years. Unfortunately, we still lack international city tourism and travel groups in the city of Salzburg. Here we are behind with two percent compared to the previous year ”, says Daniela Kinz, managing director of Salzburg AG Tourismus. The annual balance of the tourism division of Salzburg AG thus shows a clear urban-rural divide in transports.
Two thirds fewer promotions than in the record year
The tourism division of Salzburg AG generated a total of 23 million euros in sales in 2019, 3.5 million people were transported to mountains and across lakes. In the previous year, sales then collapsed to 5.5 million euros. This year it has risen slightly again, but the comparison between 2021 and 2019 is bitter: “Unfortunately, we’re still 60 percent behind,” said Kinz.
7.5 million euros for the new valley station
Investments are currently being made, for example in a new valley station at the Schafbergbahn – a 7.5 million euro project. It is uncertain when these investments can be brought in again. “Seriously, nobody can predict how the pandemic will develop. The experts expect a convergence to the pre-pandemic level from 2024, ”said Kinz.
“Addressing guests from neighboring countries”
Salzburg AG Tourismus is currently trying all means to attract the public. In nearby places like Germany, the Czech Republic or Italy, this is still halfway successful. The lack of international guests and the lack of tour groups cannot be compensated for with offers such as the five-treasure ticket for all tourism offers of Salzburg AG. Since the presentation in March, 700 such tickets have been sold.
