Thessaloniki: KISE demands protection of the historical memory of Eleftherias Square
A special announcement of importance was made to the Central Israeli Council of Greece (KISE) regarding the symbolic significance of Freedom Square for Greek Jews
“The” Memory “is a continuous process of reminders and messages to every visitor, every passer-by from Freedom Square, to see the place of martyrdom, one does not wonder why this happened and why civil society remained, for the most part, simple . spectator of this atrocity. ” mentions, among others, the KISE, while appealing to the State, the Local Government and the social institutions of the city, to highlight and safeguard the historical memory of Freedom Square after its last transformations into a parking lot.
Below, the full announcement:
Eleftherias Square in Thessaloniki has been identified in the memory of Greek Jews as a square of human humiliation, as a square of human inhumanity, as a square that symbolizes the beginning of the campaign of extermination of the Jewish population of the city. There, on the black Saturday of July 11, 1942, the German occupiers deported 9,000 Jews from Thessaloniki and implemented the “Final Solution” plan that led to the deportation and extermination of 45,000 Thessaloniki Jews.
“Memory” is a continuous process of reminders and messages to every visitor, every passer-by from Freedom Square, to see the place of martyrdom, one does not wonder why this happened and why civil society remained, for the most part, a mere spectator . of this atrocity.
The Holocaust Memorial of the city must dominate Eleftherias Square and the Square must remind everyone that 9,000 Thessalonians suffered and martyred there just because they were born Jews. Because the city has to face its past, the citizens have to reflect, and the young people have to learn from the past so that its egg does not hatch again.
We are sure that the State, the Local Government and the social bodies will highlight and guard the historical memory of Eleftherias Square in Thessaloniki.
