Setúbal wine tops the list of “bargains” of the year in the “Washington Post”. In Portugal it costs four euros | USA
“My best choice for this year is actually very young. I tried the mixture Red Pioneiro, from the Setúbal Peninsula, just a few weeks ago and I was impressed by the way the flavors persisted, and developed, over several days – a characteristic that shows a quality you don’t often find for 12 dollars ( €10.60) per bottle. ” This is how Pioneiro 2018, a wine by Venâncio Costa Lima, from Palmela – already used to other distinctions, such as the best muscat in 2020 in the Muscats du Monde competition -, reaches the mouths of the world thanks to the choice of Dave McIntyre, journalist from wines make Washington Post.
The newspaper published its usual list of 12 wines of the year that are a find. McIntyre quick that the pandemic has once again limited wine tourism for another year. “For many of us, traveling in 2021 was again largely virtual, through modern technology, video calling and the ancient gift of wine.”

The reference list is the result of a search for “a variety of styles, grapes and regions that reflect the diversity of the market and the hard work carried out by winegrowers, importers and retailers”. “For the most part, I chose wines that excited, surprised and enchanted me”, quick. All wines have stars from 1 to 3.
And the Pioneer Red Wine 2018 receives the three stars, which is equivalent to “extraordinary”. Referring to that “Portugal no longer detours us to surprise us with its value wines”, He adds that, even so, this left him“ amazed ” with the“ complexity that it offers ”versus“ its price ”. Highlighting the notes of wild fruits, “tobacco leaves and autumn leaves”, ensures that the flavors develop and become more intertwined in the following days. It reminds you of “an unfortified port”. In Portugal, the wine has a retail price of €4 at Venâncio Costa Lima.
None of the top 3 on the list of McIntyre The Independent Tempranillo 2019 (Lower Aragon, Spain) and Paul D Rosé 2020 (Wagram, Austria) follow the Pioneer. The full article (for subscribers) is here.
