So far, in 2021, about a thousand cubs were born or hatched in the Prague Zoo. This year, the Troja Zoo identified the breeding of tayra fours, young eagle parrots, female South American tapirs and Congo muscovy ducks as special breeding successes this year.
“From the beginning of the year to the present, 1,027 cubs from a total of 199 different animal species – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish – were born or hatched in the Prague Zoo,” said Miroslav Bobek, director of the Prague Zoo.
Historically, the first four tayras or Brazilian martens in the Czech Republic were born in the Prague Zoo on August 31st. There are three females and one male. According to representatives of the Troja Zoo, such a number of cubs is unusual for these beasts. Normally, one or two cubs are born to female tayras. Prague Zoo has been breeding tayers since 2004.
Trichy eagles, which are on the Red List of Endangered Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) among the vulnerable species, breed the zoo in the metropolis as the only zoo in the Czech Republic. In Europe, these parrots can be seen in six other gardens. This year, the group of triches bred in the Prague Zoo has grown by two cubs. This year’s first trichy hatch hatched in January, the second, which was born in October, is the first naturally reared young in a European zoo. According to the zoo’s representatives, the young should leave the nest box at the end of the year. Trichy Zoo in Prague has been breeding since 2014.
According to the IUCN, South American tapirs are also among the vulnerable species. The female Jasmína, who is now almost seven months old, was bred in Prague this year. Jasmine is the fourth local addition of its kind. The tapirs were bred by the zoo from 1950 to 1957, the breeding was resumed in 2004.
According to the zoo, seven young Congolese muskrats are a great breeding success. She hatched in Troy in April and her parents behaved naturally. The Prague Zoo has been breeding these little birds since mid-2020. It has thus joined the two muscovy facilities in Europe.
