The light show is more than two kilometers long, a small Christmas market offers not only the normal market offers but also Frankfurt specialties.
Frankfurt – The water is gone, but the slides and the hedges glitter around the adventure pool of the stadium pool in a sea of lights. Jürgen Vieth is delighted with the outdoor pool, which has been pimped up for Christmas and is usually orphaned in winter. Now the restaurateur, who in addition to six pubs and restaurants in Alt-Sachsenhausen also runs the snack bars in the Stadionbad in summer, strolls across the meadow warmly wrapped in a winter jacket and Eintracht wool hat. He stops and points to the light projection in the water mist, which is sprayed into the night sky from the large swimming pool. Sharks flicker across the scene, seahorses dance with each other, a sailing ship sails by.
The changing rooms are illuminated in changing colors, and glowing snowballs lie on the meadow. The illuminated walkway leads under the arcade, on which the guests are guided through the more than two-kilometer-long light show on the grounds of the Deutsche Bank Park and the stadium pool.
Frankfurt: the sunbathing area becomes a light meadow
The large sunbathing lawn is heavily frequented in summer, but lies fallow in winter. May. That doesn’t have to be the case, thought Vieth – you can also use the bathroom for events in winter. Just like the former ball meadow, which was closed in summer, “I discovered it by chance,” said Vieth. The small Christmas market with a chain carousel, stalls and tents has now been set up there, which Vieth and a 35-person team from the “Fraa Rauscher” restaurant in Klappergasse and the summer catering team at the Stadionbad look after for the Christmas Garden. The employees can be recognized by their wine-red “Fraa Rauscher” sweaters with a printed portrait of the famous lady. In addition to snacks such as French fries, bratwurst, candy floss and roasted almonds, the twelve stalls also offer typical Sachsenhausen specialties – such as green sauce, hot Ebbelwei and hot medlar.
“We deliberately did this in order to bring Frankfurt flair into the Frankfurt ‘Christmas Garden'”, said Vieth. The light show is in cities across Europe from Madrid to London, in Germany it can be seen in nine cities from Berlin to Mainau Island.
Frankfurt restaurateur: Alt-Sachsenhausen can do more than just a party
With his “Sachsenhausen” engagement at the Frankfurt show, Vieth also wants to show that “we innkeepers from Alt-Sachsenhausen can do much more than party and make noise, including what people associate the quarter with”. Company celebrations could be booked in the tents, with a buffet and all the chicanery. However, only a few actually took place, as many canceled due to the increasing number of corona cases. With the “Fraa Rauscher” team, Vieth would also have entertained the ice rink in Neu-Isenburg, which was canceled.
Corona is causing hosts to rethink, including in Alt-Sachsenhausen, according to Vieth. The going out behavior has rotated 180 degrees. The audience had become younger, the older ones stayed away increasingly, presumably out of fear. Admission controls on 2G also kept many from going out. “In Alt-Sachsenhausen, 2G ribbons could help, which simplify admission,” says Vieth. The Alt-Sachs-Neu initiative canceled the Christmas market on Paradiesplatz again this year due to Corona. And the Friday meeting, at which young and old sat together on Paradise Square, is long history. The Christmas market in the stadium, on the other hand, could have a future: The “Christmas Garden” should again bathe the stadium pool and stadium in colorful light next winter.
The light show has been extended until January 16, tickets (2G) at www.christmas-garden.de
