Düsseldorf, December 27, 2021. Milestone in the infrastructure project “5G for the City of Cologne”: Vodafone has put a new 5G mobile radio station into operation in Cologne
and at the same time started the next expansion stage for the new broadband technology 5G. Currently Vodafone is already supplying the population with 5G in 30 locations in the city.
Another 46 Vodafone locations within the city will have 5G technology installed by mid-2022. The medium-term goal is to connect the entire population of the city to the 5G network, if possible.
In order to create a nationwide 5G network, Vodafone WILL first of all use the existing cellular network infrastructure and 5G antennas, where it is possible to put its network into operation in the city. The already and all 372 mobile radio stations are also gradually being upgraded, as 5G technology is also being installed there – for example on masts, observation towers, church towers on the roofs of town halls, office buildings and residential buildings. This is is Station for Station for the next few years.
The advantages of 5G
In terms of mobile data traffic, 5G covers all the advantages of the LTE mobile broadband technology – albeit at a significantly higher speed: Customers can surf the Internet and use mobile data services. For example, you can quickly download HD films, enjoy videos in HD quality and follow major sports and cultural events in the live stream. However, 5G delivers speeds than LTE and even higher latency times in the millisecond range. In the future, this will enable applications such as self-driving cars that communicate with each other.
In the vicinity of the 5G stations, the new broadband technology can be used by everyone on site – provided the customer has a corresponding 5G device and a current contract from Vodafone. Various 5G smartphone models are available for on the go or a 5G router for at home. Several (up to 64) end devices – smartphones, tablets, notebooks, televisions, etc. – can be connected to the 5G broadband Internet at the same time via each 5G router. This means that 5G is an alternative to slow DSL lines for Internet supply in the vicinity of the stations.
The potential of 5G
5G can also become a network revolution that will bring new products for numerous sectors and industries and make our everyday lives more livable in many areas. With 5G, we will arrive in real time in perspective. First of all, this makes connected vehicles possible. Because only delay-free information enables a world without traffic lights, traffic jams and traffic deaths. The same applies to telemedicine. With 5G, services will emerge that we cannot yet imagine – in addition to the automotive industry, road traffic and healthcare, also in areas such as agriculture and forestry, education, machine industry, logistics, shipping and many other industries.
The other one
Mobile network expansion in the city of Cologne
Currently 99.9 percent of the population in Cologne and the Vodafone mobile network as well as 99.9 percent of the residents and the mobile broadband network LTE are connected. By mid-2022, Vodafone will have completed 43 further LTE construction projects. We will install additional LTE antennas at 42 existing LTE stations in order to increase the capacities and speeds in the catchment area of these LTE stations. A new LTE site is also planned.
