“No Venetian I know would return to live in Venice”. letters
In response to the letter “Venice is greedy for money. It would be time for a sustainable project “.
It breaks my heart every time I go to Venice. My city where I was born and raised and that I love deeply.
I have lived on the mainland for several years. Unfortunately, there is nothing left of my Venice, where life in the fields and streets has disappeared, the local milkman-type shops for the few remaining residents are almost non-existent and old-time Venetians are fewer and fewer.
I have only one elderly relative left in Venice, all of them are on the mainland and few jobs in Venice.
The middle class has gone by mass over the years. Impossible to live in Venice with dignity with someone as a worker or even as an employee.
No Venetian who has left that I know would return to live in Venice and even if it would be difficult to support himself.
It makes me smile bitterly that to enter churches I saw in my childhood and adolescence I have to pay because I am no longer a resident, but others who know nothing about Venice and what it was like are the new residents with all the rights that come with it.
I walk with malony in the calle where I grew up and where there are no longer voices of adults calling the children home for dinner, but a string of bells that read “tourist home” and I feel a huge sense of anger at how my city has been sacrificed to the greed of a few. Unfortunately we are at the point of no return.
