Navalny accuses Portugal of taking bribes to make Abramovich a Portuguese citizen | Russia
Russian opponent Alexei Navalny has harshly criticized Portugal for having attributed Portuguese nationality through naturalization to Roman Abramovich, Russian multimillionaire and Chelsea owner.
According to Navalny, Abramovich is “the closest oligarch to Putin and one of his wallets.” “Finally [Abramovich] he managed to find a country where he can pay some bribes and make some semi-official and official payments to end up in the European Union and NATO – on the other side of Putin’s front line, that is ”, said the Kremlin critic in a post on the social network Twitter .
Alexei Navalny also says that Abramovich bought a Boeing 787 plane worth 350 million dollars as a New Year’s gift for himself. “Putin and Abramovich steal from the budget [da Rússia] and they invest money in the West”, he said, referring to the fact that a Boeing is an American company.
“The West is frightened by Putin’s attack on Ukraine, but it gives citizenship to its trusted oligarch,” noted the Russian opponent. “Portuguese employees carry suitcases with money. The US economy erected 350 million dollars. Television presenters praise Putin for his fight against NATO while foaming at the mouth. A perfect cycle of hypocrisy and corruption. And only the sad citizen of Russia, who paid for all this, remains in the store and assesses whether he has enough money to buy a bottle of vodka and three tangerines for the New Year,” he added.
As reported by PÚBLICO, Roman Abramovich has been a Portuguese citizen since April. The Russian billionaire was naturalized under the Nationality Law as a Sephardic Jew.
To obtain nationality through naturalization, the state saw its Sephardic ancestry proven by the Sephardic Certification Commission of the Portuguese Jewish community, of which it has been a partner in recent years. An essential certification for the process, which entered the Central Registry Office, in Lisbon, and the Ministry of Justice (which has the power to grant nationality) on October 16, 2020 and was concluded on April 30, according to what the PUBLIC found. All under the Nationality Law, which makes it possible for descendants of the former Sephardic community to obtain citizenship.
Alexei Navaly, Putin’s main political opponent, was arrested in January after returning to Moscow from Germany, where he was treated after being poisoned on his return from a trip to Siberia, which he attributed to the Kremlin. The Fund to Combat Corruption (FBK), a movement he created, was later banned for “extremism”. Navalny is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence in a prison east of Moscow.
