Fish predators threaten fish farming in Slovakia. Impairment is still growing – Country – Economy
This year, the fish-eating predator did the most damage in the breeding facility in Uzovská Panica in the Rimavská Sobota district, where carp production decreased by 36 tonnes due to cormorant costs in only one production center.
Slovak Fishermen’s Association (SRZ) – The Council of Žilina will land about 600 tons of fish with a total value of almost three million euros a year in the Slovak fishing grounds.
“Improvement is growing every year. This is because the number of SRZ members is increasing and more funding is being sought from fishermen. In the spring, we start planting the most small pike and toothfish from lowland fish, and then we gradually switch to planting fast and annual carp. Later, we will plant two-year-old and three-year-old carp in the districts. These make up a substantial part of the stocks in the volume of about 400-450 tons per year, “said Ján Gulas, head of the handle production department of the SRZ Council.
He added huge production outages through cormorants.

“We also have a huge problem with the cormorant on the ponds in Číčov. There they declared a protected larger area for us, so the cormorants can neither shoot nor scare. The facility in Uzovská Panica is also in a higher level of protection. We are helpless, we can only see what damage the cormorants are doing to us there. And we will never see real damage. If the cormorant eats the carp and flies with it, no one can decide how big the carp would grow to that age, “the production stated.

According to him, the shortcomings of their own production must be solved by purchasing stocks from other Slovak producers associated in the association of fish farmers and from selected suppliers in the Czech Republic.
SRZ fish farms also produce about 50 tons of two-year-old rainbow trout and about 10 tons of two-year-old brown trout per year. City and local organizations also collect brown and rainbow trout eggs from the SRZ. In the hatchery for central and western Slovakia in Slovianská dolina, they produce about two million eggs of brown trout and about 1.5 million eggs of rainbow trout. The hatchery in Svit, used to fish in eastern Slovakia, produces about 400,000 eggs of brown trout.
