A tragic waterfall in Zurich Zoo.
Today, Friday, around noon, the zebra Sjarlie is killed. As the operators write on Instagram and Twitter, another animal is responsible for this.
According to the post, the white rhinoceros bull Kimba injured the Grevy’s zebra stallion in the stomach. Sjarlie dies on the spot.
The collision between the two animals takes place on the winter area, which is visible to the zoo guests. Several animal species live together in the same enclosure on the Lewa savannah: rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, ostriches and chickens.
“This is a very unfortunate and unpleasant incident,” says zoo director Severin Dressen in a message. According to Dressen, there is always a “certain residual risk when different animal species live together.” But such incidents are the exception.
The incident has no consequences for the rhinoceros bull Kimba. It is reckoned that he wanted to push the zebra aside. An intention to kill is not assumed.
