Ómicron represents 61.5% of cases in Portugal, which will lead to “increased incidence” | Coronavirus
The Ómicron variant is already a strain of the new dominant coronavirus in Portugal, with a proportion of cases evaluated at 61.5%, indicates the weekly observation report of the “red lines” for covid-19, released this Friday by the authorities of health.
The most recent from the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (Insa), with monitoring of the red lines for covid-19, also points out the pressure on health services and the impact on mortality that “are high, although with a stable trend, revealing regional asymmetries”.
The document indicates that the specific mortality per covid-19 (21.8 deaths in 14 days, per one million inhabitants) also presents “a stable trend”.
“This mortality rate reveals a high impact of the pandemic on mortality”, the authorities say.
Authorities warn that “the period of dominance of the Omicron variant will likely lead to an increase in the number of contacts due to the festivities and will result in a rapid increase in incidence, with the impact on health services and the magnitude of mortality still uncertain.”
For this reason, DGS and INSA “strongly” recommend “strengthening measures of social distancing, testing, booster vaccination of eligible groups and capacity building of health services for a rapid increase in demand is strongly recommended”.
In 15 days, the threshold of 960 cases per 100,000 inhabitants can be exceeded
According to DGS and INSA, the number of new cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2 per 100,000 inhabitants, accumulated in the last 14 days, was 630 cases, with an increasing trend at national level and strongly increasing in the Lisbon region and Tagus Valley.
This revealing information, in the age group aged 65 or over, the number of new cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, accumulated in the last 14 days, was 244, with a “stable trend at the national level”.

In the last seven days, 84% of cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were granted within 24 hours of notification (last week it was 89%) and, in the same period, were screened and qualified, when necessary, all contacts in 58% of cases.
The report notes that the ability to track cases reveals “signs of pressure”.
