Covid-19. Portugal registers more than 12 thousand cases and 11 deaths | Covid-19
Portugal registered, this Thursday, 11 more deaths and 12,943 cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the covid-19 disease. The numbers are part of the latest epidemiological bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) which was released this Friday, Christmas Eve.
There has not been such a high number of new cases since 29 January (13,200 new cases were reported on that day). However, deaths, hospitalizations and intensive care now have much lower numbers. In total, 1,266,037 cases and 18,851 deaths have been registered since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal.
Friday’s status report indicates there are 864 covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals, 29 fewer than the day before. Of those, 149 are in intensive care, one more than the day before. As of December 24, 2020, there were 2853 people admitted (505 in intensive care) and 70 deaths were recorded – there were 4378 new cases
In all, there are now 7304 active cases in Portugal and a total of 91,947 people are dealing with the virus in Portugal. There are a further 6043 contacts under surveillance by the health authorities.
The greatest number of new cases was registered in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (two deaths and 6,519 new ones). The North registers the highest number of deaths (six deaths and 3796 cases). The Center region totals 2 more deaths and 1527 new cases. Alentejo counts 316 new cases and one more death. In the Algarve, there are over 330 cases, with no deaths to be registered.
A Madeiran Register 382 new cases of infection. The Azores, on the other hand, add up to 73 cases.
of 18,851 people who died up to the covid-19 data in Portugal, 12,242 (65%) were over 80 years old (562 men and 6617 women). Of the total number of deaths recorded since March 2020, 9895 are men and 8956 are women.
572 active outbreaks
The number of active outbreaks is also lower than at the beginning of the year. As of Monday, there were 572 active outbreaks in mainland Portugal; 34 outbreaks were recorded in nursing homes. The information is contained in another note from the DGS, also released this Friday. “These data contrast with the maximum number of active outbreaks recorded in February 2021, when there were 921 active outbreaks in mainland Portugal”, reads a note on the DGS website.
The majority of outbreaks are located in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region (297 outbreaks), followed by the North (165) and the Center area (50 outbreaks).
