Francis Grass, cultural assistant: “Make Toulouse shine through photography …”
On the occasion of the launch of the exhibition dedicated to Jean Dieuzaide one hundred years after his birth, the elected representative in charge of Culture for the City of Toulouse, Francis Grass, evokes the preponderant place of photography on the local cultural agenda .
What is the objective of this exhibition dedicated to Jean Dieuzaide?
The idea was to have a valuation of the extremely important and diversified work of the work of Jean Dieuzaide, which is allowed us with this great exhibition which takes, moreover, in the unique place of the Jacobins. This retrospective of his entire life and his work allows us to locate the major themes, the major dominant periods of his life or the subjects he has dealt with but we can very well imagine, we have the future in front of us. , a regular valuation by thematic perhaps.
How are you going to give more value to this considerable collection which includes nearly 500,000 documents?
Our project, LieuZaide, consists of creating a new space at the Water Tower. We will soon be launching the project management market which will make it possible to choose an architect who will then do the preliminary design then the project and will follow the site to enlarge the space of this place which is very small, to have a way to continue means to promote the work of Jean Dieuzaide because we have it for years! Then we can do it through books since we are solicited by publishers (1), we can do it thematically as we did during the work on Place Saint-Sernin where photos of Jean were exhibited. Dieuzaide. Our vocation is also to shine outside Toulouse. We hope that this exhibition will be requested elsewhere as we do with the exhibitions of the Museum, of the Quai des Savoirs, we really have a capacity to export our conceptual work.
Some exhibitions get a label from the Ministry of Culture, could this one claim?
Yes of course we will do everything for and the idea is to bring the work to life over time and that it be one of the remarkable elements of Toulouse. In the same way that the specialty of Toulouse is to have several photographic collections like those of Eugène Trutat (1840-1910) on the Pyrenees in particular in the museum, we have Germaine Chaumel (1895-1982), we have a photographic tradition and we are currently in the process of reviewing some holdings in the Municipal Archives that we are learning to acquire so we are not stopping there. There are all the collections from the Water Tower, of course, and then we also have the photo season. We can see that in 1974 there was only one gallery dedicated to photography, the Water Tower, and that today there are a number of exhibitions, photo festivals such as ManifestO and MAP which have grown considerably, but also exceptional exhibitions such as the one dedicated to Jean Dieuzaide. Really, Toulouse is a fairly exemplary city in photos, we are not characterized by a big annual festival, we are photos all year round!
The Minister of Culture was recently visiting and found good news for the Opera, the Sorano Theater and the festivals …
She announced the two labels the day after her visit. The National Opera label, which we were of course hoping for as recognition of the level the Opera has had for many years. She also announced the Stage label conventioned for the Sorano theater which the work of a dynamic team that does a nice job on young creation, support for young artists and with an audience that is there and is renews. As for festivals, there are 10,000 and Toulouse already has a hundred. It is a somewhat general message of support, but today the festivals are supported by local communities, mainly by municipalities.
