ELAS tips for the protection of citizens from theft during the holidays
The General Police Directorate of Thessaloniki advises the citizens to prevent the commission of crimes against them during the holidays.

In detail, as mentioned in a relevant announcement, the General Police Directorate of Thessaloniki, means the festive period of Christmas, New Year and Epiphany, attaching special importance to the protection of citizens, both in terms of public health and the prevention of crimes against. has given the necessary directions to its Services for the intensification of measures, which include systematic inspections, increased patrols and other police actions.
In this context and in order to protect public health and in particular to avoid and limit the spread of coronavirus, services of the G.A.D.Th. will carry out intensive inspections daily in various parts of the city, while citizens are required to comply with the prescribed measures.
At the same time, considering particularly important the information of the citizens regarding the prevention of crimes against them, the General Police Directorate of Thessaloniki advises:
DURING YOUR VISIT TO THE MARKET
* Avoid transferring large sums of money.
* Protect your bags and wallets especially in crowded places, such as city bus stops, city buses, public markets, crowded shops, main shopping streets, etc.
* Do not put your wallets in outside pockets or in the back pocket of your pants.
* Hold your bag firmly and go to the side of the sidewalk, having it towards the side of the buildings and not the street.
* For no reason do not leave the bags open.
* Do not leave bags outside clothing store rehearsals.
* Do not leave bags in adjacent chairs or tables of health stores.
ON HOLIDAYS AND LEAVING HOME
* Make sure the doors and windows of your home are well secured.
* Find out about your absence from relatives and friends or neighbors you trust, to supervise your home and if there are particularly serious reasons and the Police Department in your area.
* Do not leave notes about just what you are going to return or about how long you will be away.
* Do not leave messages outside the door or mailboxes overflowing with prints and magazines on the headboard. They are “barkers” of your absence. Also avoid leaving stairs, furniture or other bulky items in your garden that will help the would-be perpetrator climb.
* Your house or apartment does not look “completely closed”, thus indicating your absence.
* Light, if possible, automatic timer.
* Activate, if any, the alarm system.
* Do not leave large sums of money or valuables in your home.
* In case you are informed by neighbors, friends or relatives that you notice something suspicious in your home or notify the “100” or the Police Department in your area.
DURING YOUR TRANSACTION AT ATM
* Before starting the transaction, carefully check the area around you for any suspicious movements.
* Make sure that in the area where the ATM is located. there is no accessory, the presence of which is not justified.
* If you find a suspicious object, alterations or marks in the card slot, clogged frame, abrasions, additional parts, holes, etc., avoid using this ATM. Notify the Bank immediately.
* In case the ATM If you keep the card or have a problem with your transaction, only contact the Bank that issued the card.
* Do not trust strangers who are willing to help you operate the ATM. or ask for your card.
* In case the machine malfunctions, contact only the Bank’s telephone numbers.
* When entering your PIN code, “protect” the keyboard, so that no one around you perceives the four-digit number.
* After completing the withdrawal, count the money discreetly and as soon as you can.
* Be careful not to be alone if you want to use an ATM. during the night.
* Use an ATM. located in a special booth, do not allow strangers to enter the area during the transaction.
* Do not leave your keys or valuables in your car while using an ATM. and do not leave your car engine running.
REMEMBER
* If you have lost or stolen anything or if your place of residence has been breached, notify the Police immediately (100).
