Weather: No white Christmas in Salzburg
Bad news for the regional capitals: According to the forecast of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), one can only celebrate a white Christmas in Klagenfurt. There is currently 15 centimeters of snow that WILL last until Christmas Eve and even longer. For Klagenfurt it is the first white Christmas since 2010.
White Christmas only in the mountains
In general: White Christmas can be expected in Austria this year in the mountains from around 600 meters above sea level – the snow that is already there remains here. However, there is no more fresh snow in deep areas, so the ZAMG on Tuesday.
Christmas sun
On Friday morning there are still thick clouds and rain in places, occasionally possibly black ice. During the day it is at least temporarily sunny in most of Austria. Along the Danube and north of it, it is also densely cloudy during the day and a few raindrops are possible. The temperatures on December 24th are not particularly wintry either. Although the mercury column in Klagenfurt, Graz, Innsbruck and Eisenstadt falls below freezing point in the morning, temperatures rise significantly in all nine cities during the day: ten degrees plus are expected for Vienna, nine degrees for St. Pölten and eight degrees for Salzburg and Eisenstadt.
Rain, sun and clouds on holidays
On Christmas Day there are dense clouds in the south and especially in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia it can rain, above about 1,300 to 1,500 meters. Everywhere else meteorologists expect a change from clouds and sun, north of the Danube maybe also a few raindrops. In the morning between minus five and four degrees plus, in the afternoon between four and eleven degrees.
On Sunday, the day of St. In the eastern half of Austria it remains largely dry but at most a little sun. It remains mild for the time being.
