Sweden’s Sara Hector beats Mikaela Shiffrin for first win in seven years | Mikaela Shiffrin
Swedish skier Sara Hector held on to her first lead and beat Mikaela Shiffrin on Wednesday in a giant slalom for women in the World Cup at Courchevel.
It was Hector’s second victory of his career, and the first in almost seven years.
Hector won by 0.35 seconds a day after finishing second to Shiffrin in another GS on the same hill for his first podium result in a year.
“It’s amazing. It’s incredible, and I’m so surprised,” said Hector. “It was such a big fight and I did not think I was that fast. I feel so amazing. It’s crazy. Im so proud.”
The world cup champion in giant slalom Marta Bassino ended up six tenths in third place after failing to take points in the first two GS races of the season. Tessa Worley from France, who was second after the opening race, dropped to four, followed by overall defender Petra Vlhova as fifth.
Shiffrin’s main challenger in the overall standings, Sofia Goggia, failed to take World Cup points for the second day in a row. The American now leads her with 115 points.
Goggia slipped off the track after losing her balance in a left turn halfway through her initial run. The Italian went out in the second stage of Tuesday’s race.
Federica Brignone, 2020 overall champion, also failed to finish her second run.
Paula Moltzan from the USA finished in 13th place after taking 15 places with a strong second run, after only making the turn in 28th place after the initial race.
World champion Lara Gut-Behrami, the winner of the World Cup in slalom, Katharina Liensberger, and Alice Robinson attended the event after positive Covid-19 tests.
The race replaced the GS that was canceled in Killington, Vermont, in November due to strong winds.
The Women’s World Cup continues with another GS and slalom in Lienz, Austria, next week.
