MOSCOW, December 22 (Reuters) – Sweden’s Ericsson (ERICb.ST) is reviewing a site in Russia’s exclusive Kaliningrad region that could be used to build telecom base stations, the daily Kommersant reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed telecom industry sources.
Russia has said it will extend telecom operators’ licenses after 2023 for LTE (long-term development) networks, provided they start building networks with only Russian equipment, part of a broader effort by Moscow to promote domestic technology and IT services.
Kommersant said that Ericsson conducted a technical review of a website owned by GS Group, a multi-industrial holding company.

Ericsson is considering building its own factory or finding a Russian partner, Kommersant’s sources said.
Ericsson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. GS Group declined to comment.
Kommersant quoted Ericsson as having a constant dialogue with authorities in many countries, including Russia, regarding 5G and other technology.
Finland-based Nokia (NOKIA.HE) said last month that it was collaborating with Russian YADRO, a developer and manufacturer of servers and storage systems, to build 4G and 5G base stations. Read more
