The construction of the longest and most expensive tunnel in Slovakia is complicated. Bratislava is waiting for an answer
The metropolis of Slovakia is crossed by a natural barrier, which does not provide drivers with much choice. You will either cross the Carpathians through Pezinská Baba, or you must go directly through Bratislava. There are several alternatives to “short” across the massif. But so far only on paper. The closest to implementation is paradoxically the ten most expensive and longest variants – the Carpathian tunnel.
With its 12 kilometers, it will be the largest structure of its kind in the Central European region with an estimated cost of over one billion euros. The section, which will be a continuation of the D4 bypass, is awaiting a final and valid environmental impact assessment, which, however, is moving forward over time due to a large number of comments.
“We anticipate the end of the process with a valid final opinion in the next year 2022,” Eva Žgravčáková, spokeswoman for the National Highway Company.
