Thessaloniki: Christmas cards with … mathematical – artistic creations
As part of the collaboration of the Mathematics Group of the Experimental High School of the University of Macedonia with NOESIS-Center for Dissemination of Science and Museum of Technology, we offer free Christmas cards with mathematical-visual creations to the educational community and the general public to send Christmas presents.
The cards were designed by the students of the Mathematics Group, they use the mathematical ideas of Mosaics (paving / tessellations) and Isometrics. The cards can be downloaded from HERE. You can use them in electronic form or print them. The cards are available, either without texts for you to write the wishes you want, or with Christmas wishes, in Greek and English. Browse the various pages and choose what you like and express.
Mosaics and isometries
The mathematical ideas of mosaics and isometries are implemented in the card designs, which have been used over time in the visual and decorative techniques of all the cultures of the world. Mosaic is the covering of the floor with the same or different shapes, normal or not, in such a way that they do not leave any gaps between them.
Isometries are geometric formations that do not alter the shape of the object being transformed. They are probably not the oldest mathematical ideas that were invented.
