The dead on Europe’s borders – society
The Dutch organization UNITED, United Against Refugees Death, documents since 1993 with a European network of supporters the dead on Europe’s borders: There are currently 44,764 documented deceased women, men and children who fled their countries of origin and died trying to get to Europe. Based on 1041 sources, identity, origin and cause of death were and are researched as well as possible. Many of the deceased are still not identified by name. Refugees died at the external or internal borders of Europe, in the Mediterranean Sea and on freight trains because they desperately committed suicide in European refugee centers or were not treated as babies in a hospital. As reported, only yesterday morning two young men from Morocco were caught by the train on the Brenner railway line near Brennerbad after they had apparently unsuccessfully applied for asylum in Austria.
The identity of many of the 44,766 deceased is not known: not their name, not their origin, neither their gender nor their age. Some are known only to be women or men or to be children.
